Credit card debtCredit Card Debt Is A Leading Cause for FIling Bankruptcy
Credit card debt is one of the top reasons people consider filing bankruptcy.  Other major reasons for filing bankruptcy include medical bills, repossessions, garnishments, and divorce. But one common theme running through all of the other major causes for bankruptcy is credit cards.  Often times, people face high medical bills or divorce related costs and then transfer these costs to a credit card.

Unmanageable Spiraling Revolving Credit Debt
The problem with credit card debt is the balances continue to rise because of high interest rates.  If you miss a payment or accidentally charge over your limit, then you are hit with penalties in addition to the interest.  The average credit card has an interest rate so high the balance will double every three years, even if no additional charges are made.  Many people are not aware of the fact that a credit card company may raise your interest and minimum monthly payment, even if you are 100% current on the credit card payments, if you make a late payment on another account with different creditor.

Bankruptcy Can Protect You From Credit Card Debt
When filing a bankruptcy you can eliminate all of your credit card debt, interest and penalties.  Typically the only time you can not eliminate a credit card debt in your bankruptcy is if there was recently a large charge or cash advance taken out on the card immediately prior to filing bankruptcy.

If you are facing extremely high credit card debts and the interest and penalties are continuing to rise, then you should consult with a bankruptcy attorney immediately.  If you are able to continue making you minimum payments on the credit card you should do so until your bankruptcy attorney tells you to stop.  Also, if you are considering filing bankruptcy against credit card debt, then you should stop using your credit cards immediately, do not do any balance transfers to other credit cards, and you should not take out any cash advances until after you have spoken with a bankruptcy lawyer.
